Every diaper bag checklist online has 40-some items on it. You don't need 40 things. After years of packing one every day, here's what actually earns its spot.
The non-negotiables
This is the core kit. With these, you can handle almost anything:
- Diapers — one for every hour you'll be out, plus two extra
- Wipes
- Diaper cream (we use Desitin)
- A changing pad
- One full change of clothes — blowouts don't warn you
- A wet bag for the dirty stuff
The diapers, wipes, and changing pad all go together in one large pouch, so a change is grab-one-thing, not dig-through-everything. Honestly, it's why we love the Crown Carryall — it comes with everything built in: two pouches, a changing pad, a wet bag for messes, and stroller straps. Nothing extra to buy.
Food and feeding
- Bottles, or pre-portioned formula so you're not measuring one-handed
- A burp cloth or bib
- For older babies, snacks on snacks
Keep anything that needs to stay cold in the insulated pouch so it stays fresh.
The easy-to-forget extras
- Hand sanitizer
- A pacifier in a clean case, plus a backup
- Infant Tylenol and a thermometer
- A small toy or two
- Something for you — a snack, a phone charger, lip balm
What to leave out
You don't need the whole nursery. Skip the wipe warmer, the five backup outfits, the bulky toys. The one habit that beats any checklist: restock the bag at the end of each day so it's always ready to walk out the door.
