Packing a diaper bag for a newborn can feel like preparing for every possible scenario at once. But here's the thing: you don't need to bring everything. You just need the right things.
We've been through the trial and error so you don't have to. Here's what we always pack (and how we organize it all) (and what we stopped packing) when heading out with a newborn.
The Non-Negotiables
1. Diapers Seems obvious, but easy to forget when you're running on no sleep. We've tried Pampers, Millie Moon, and Coterie. Whatever fits your baby's body shape best and prevents blowouts is the right one.
2. Wipes The true multitasker. Diaper changes, sticky hands, coffee spills on your shirt. We love Freestyle and Honest Brand for their clean, gentle ingredients.Ā
3. Changing Pad Public changing tables are unpredictable. Having your own pad makes a huge difference. (The Crown Carryall has one built in, which is one less thing to remember.)
4. Diaper Cream Newborn skin is sensitive, and a surprise rash can throw off your whole outing. We keep Desitin or Boudreaux's Butt Paste on hand at all times.
5. Extra Onesie (or Two) Blowouts happen. Be ready. A wet bag helps contain the mess, and then everything stays separate in your bag. (The Crown Carryall comes with one.)
6. Burp Cloths Muslin is our pick. Soft, absorbent, dries fast.
7. Bottle and Formula (if using) Hungry babies don't wait (especially when flying). We love Bobbie for its quality ingredients and easy digestion. If you're breastfeeding, a backup bottle of pumped milk can save you in a pinch.
8. Muslin Blanket One of the most versatile things you can pack. It keeps baby warm, covers the car seat for naps, and works as a nursing cover if that's your preference.
Nice to Haves
Pacifier: If your baby takes one, the Skip Hop Silicone Pacifier Holder keeps it clean and easy to grab.
Small Toy or Rattle: Even a few seconds of entertainment helps while you're getting settled somewhere.
Hand Sanitizer: Babyganics makes a gentle, baby safe option that's great for on the go.
Nipple Cream (if nursing): Earth Mama Nipple Butter is soothing and worth tossing in your bag.
Snacks and Water for You: Seriously. A good 18 oz Yeti or Hydroflask keeps your water cold all day, and you'll be glad you packed something to eat.
What You Can Leave Behind
You don't need to pack your entire nursery. If your bag is heavier than your baby, it might be time to edit. Baby shoes are adorable but not doing anything yet. And one or two good teething toys is plenty.
Why We Built the Crown Carryall for Exactly This
We designed the Crown Carryall because we were tired of digging through a disorganized bag while holding a fussy baby. Everything has a place. The built in changing pad and wet bag mean two fewer things to remember, and the compartments are set up so you can find what you need without looking. It's the bag we wished we'd had from day one.
Parenting is hard enough. Your bag should make it a little easier.
